Prices of grains drop in Zamfara

At a time when the world and indeed Nigeria is worrying about increasing food prices, prices of staple food items like grains and maize have come down by about 25 per cent
in Zamfara State , the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports.

Reports say that the slash in prices might not be
unconnected with the recent release of government grains
to the markets in the state.

NAN reports that the state government had last week ordered the
release of 67,200 bags of assorted grains for sale to members of
the public at N2,500 per bag.

A market survey conducted at the three markets showed that
a bag of maize which was selling for N4,800 before, is now
being sold for between N4,400 and N4,500.

The survey further revealed that a bag of millet and guinea
corn now cost N4,500 and N3,800 as against N5,000 and
N4,500 respectively.

Similarly, a measure of maize that used to go for N150, is
now N120 while a measure of millet and guinea corn are
now N110 and N90 instead of N140 and N110 they were
being sold before.

The survey, however, indicated that the prices of other food
items like rice, wheat, yam beans and beverages still remained
stable.
